Santa Clause is coming to town or Christ coming to the world?

Christmas is in the air!!!

the breeze is colder, Christmas carols everywhere, lights are blinking, gifts are given, and shops are filled with shoppers!!! :D

in this time of the year, the world is busy for Christmas; decorating houses, baking cookies, buying presents, organizing parties and the list continues. two thousand years after a humble king was born in the manger, the world seems to loose the real essence and meaning of value of Christmas. Santa clause and his gang is more and more popular than the Saviour who was born in the manger, Christmas tree is a popular Christmas icon than the nativity. A supposed to be  pious celebration is becoming more and more secularized and commercialized Business is good in Christmas. My family can attest to that!

If an inquisitive child will ask, “What is Christmas”; what will be your answer?

I am living in a monastery for 52 days now, I cannot feel that Christmas is in the air. it is not Christmas in this part of the world – not yet; it is advent here, the time of waiting for the coming of Jesus. We don’t have Christmas tree but we have Nativity with live donkey and sheep, we cannot go to places with beautiful Christmas decorations but we got to church thrice a day and sing advent songs in the prayer.

Nothing beats spending Christmas with friends and family but I am more than grateful once in my life I will be spending Christmas in a place where it leads me to the core of my favorite time of the year. Christmas is all about the coming of Jesus, it is not about our waiting for His coming nor about our deeds nor our change of heart but  it is all about the Son of God who became Son of Man. Christ came to the world to partake in the suffering of humanity. Christ in his divinity is filled with power and grandeur but Christ as a human, He came with humility. too simple to be reachable to all.

Christmas is about celebration of our faith. We celebrate for the coming of our Savior who does not just saved us from our sins but He is a Saviour that made God’s love so tangible and real. He came to the world to end our suffering. He came to remind us that God is not deaf to our pleas, that He can do everything for you even if it entails giving His only begotten Son.

As we anticipate for the coming of Jesus, I would like to invite you to meditate in the story of the Nativity and find yourself in the character in the bible. you can be a shepherd who were tired and weary, or Virgin Mary who was in pain, St. Joseph who is worried for her pregnant wife, a donkey with much burden on its back. whatever is your state right now, may you always be reminded that Christ is coming for you and me. Rejoice! Jesus is coming! God is with us! so close to us!

I have missed a lot of things this year’s Christmas. no Christmas party, no gifts, no lechon, no simbang gabi;  but Christmas away from families and friends is Christmas spent closer with God. Christmas day is certainly a celebration of my faith as I celebrate it in Rome! A sweet Christmas date of God and His beloved!

Merry Christmas everyone!!!! May Christ reign in everyone’s heart!!!!
